I was delighted recently to receive a copy of Chickens! Illustrated Chicken Breeds A to Z from the author, Sarah Rosedahl. As soon as I took it out of the package, the oldest country kid was all over me. Why? Because the art work on the front cover is delightful! Not only did Sarah write this book, but she illustrated it with her whimsical art as well.
The pages within are each dedicated to a different breed from A to Z, and includes an interesting fact to accompany the art work. The oldest country kid enjoys thumbing through the pages, finding the breeds we own, and learning a new fact about them. I have also heard over the past week, “Mom, did you know (insert chicken) has/does (insert interesting fatc.)” Obviously my chicken loving 8 year old son is enthralled and engaged by the book! I must admit, I am smitten with the art work.
This delightfully illustrated book is a wonderful way to introduce children to chickens and the great variety of colors and patterns they come in. The illustrations are not only eye catching for children, but as an adult I enjoyed Sarah’s artistic interpretation of each breed. One of my favorites is the Orpington. Doesn’t that fluffy butt just look like our Buffy! I also learned something I didn’t know about the bred’s origins!
This is a delightful, entertaining and educational book. My country kids will enjoy this book for years to come, weather it be memorizing new facts or just enjoying the beautiful art work. I read to third graders and kindergarten/first grade/second grade children (this one is a combined class that has children with Autism) every Thursday. I think they would love this book.

I would have to say that my barred rocks are my favorite breed. They always run to me when I come outside to see what I am doing…very curious chickens.
I love when our girls coming running, like little dinos!

This book is simply adorable, my kids would spend hours looking at it.

My fave breed is the Barred Plymouth Rock. A hardy, productive, sassy breed. My girls could really take care of themselves, but would still come running over for some human attention.

I love Cochins because they are sweet, fluffy and adorable.
We raised those when I was a child! I love how they a fluffy little basketballs!
Our first hens were Black Australorpe. I just loved watching them in the yard. They gave us lots of eggs. I also enjoy Buff Orpingtons. Lots of eggs, and don't laugh, their color coordinates with my cat and dog!
Two really great breeds. We had an Australorpe but it turned out to be a roo and we had to rehome him. 🙁
I love my australorps! Besides being the first chickens I owned, they are hardy, great layers, and full of personality 🙂

I love my americanas because they are so pretty with their little feathers on side of their face and they lay blue and green eggs
We have one named Ester and she is the sweetest thing ever.
I love the Frizzle chickens. They are so pretty with the fluffy feathers plus they lay pretty well. I love some of the ornamental birds.
There are some really neat birds out there aren't there!
