Take a Peek at Our Week December 24 – 30

Week two of having everyone in the family home on vacation and school break is thankfully coming to an end. We have had SO much snow and the temps have been in the negative digits, so we have all been cooped up together and it was getting rough! I love my family, in moderation. LOL

We had a wonderful Christmas, all be it small in the gift department, but our kids understand that there are more important things about Christmas than toys. We enjoyed traditions, making things for each other, and watching each other glow opening the gifts we had made.

I am already over breaking ice and refilling waterers. I know we have a long way to go with winter, but I am tired of frozen fingers and my nostrils freezing shut during chore time. I am already dreaming of gardening and sitting under a shade tree.

So what made me smile this week?

Winter time is cold, but that makes it the perfect time to pull down wasp nests!
I think they are really cool to look at, I just don’t like the residents!

You better watch out. You better not cry. You better not pout, I’m telling you why, Santa chicken is coming to town!!! Buffy decided to play the part this year and I think she looks grand! LOL

The littlest country kid got to visit reindeer! He was delighted and slightly afraid.
I finally got him to pet its butt when it wasn’t looking. Ah, holiday memories in the making!

The chickens were nestled all snuggled in their beds, while the country kids decorated sugar cookies before resting their heads. The homesteadin mama was so tired she couldn’t think, longing for a glass of Rum Chata to drink…..

Oh Christmas Eve Nate was waiting for the fat man or to kill the tree, not really sure what he is up to!

The littlest country kid LOVES the hat daddy knitted him.
I think it is so pretty and the littlest country kid wears it ALL the time now.

The oldest country kid really liked the Harry Potter scarf hubby knitted him. This was one of the first projects hubby started when he started knitting this year (yes, he has been knitting less than a year) and he finished it up this month just in time for Christmas!

The little stray kitty, now named Ginger, really enjoyed her first Christmas with us. The homemade cat nip toys were a BIG hit! She claimed two of them as her own. Nate didn’t mind, he got a new scratch pad, which is more his speed.

Cinder made me a hand warmer!!! She plopped that nice warm egg out right in front of me. What a sweet gift to keep my fingers warm on the walk back to the house! And if ya didn’t know, a freshly laid egg is very warm. Better then one of those commercial hand warmer thingies!

We were practicing VERY important life lessons when we ate out this week. The littlest country kid practiced his butt off on how to blow a straw wrapper across the table. Oh come on, you know you have done it, shooting it at a sibling! He really needs to up his game and his aim! But he looked adorable in the hat hubby knitted him as he huffed and puffed.

I picked up some seed blocks for wild birds as a boredom buster for the flock, and to try to get them to come out for some fresh air. Cinder hangs with the ducks, so getting her feet in the snow was no big deal. But Buffy…….. She REALLY wants some treats, she just REALLY doesn’t want to step in the snow to get it. Stretch, girl!!!

When I went to put everyone to bed, they all got off the roost for fresh water. Cinder, who is lowest in the pecking order and usually sleeps alone, decided it was the perfect time to get off her shelf and claim the roost as her own! Queen of the hill!!!
Remember to take time out of your busy day to find your own things to make you smile!

  1. It has been freezing here too! I can not imagine the work involved with farm animals when the temps are in the negative digits. It's all I can do to brave the cold long enough to go to the store for groceries.

    1. It doesn't hurt till you get back inside and your hands start to gain feeling again. Then it HURTS. It kinds feels like they are on fire. Ugh. But I love our critters, so it is just part of life.

  2. you are so right, smile a bit every day it makes life better The chicken you shared was a laugh for me thanks
