Take A Peek At Our Week Feb 25 – March 3

take a peek at our week

Enjoy this peek at our week!

It’s been a spring like week for the most part, which means our sugaring taps have been flowing with sap. We did have a nice dumping of snow, again, which thankfully melted within 24 hours. I am seriously getting tired of the weather mood swings. We have had spring like weather, flooding, snowing, and now back to spring with a hint of snow in this weeks forecast. Seriously a crazy year this year!

Besides sap, other things have been flowing around the homestead, like eggs from the hens in record numbers and attitude from the country kids. Oh and did I mention Mr. Bill is also trying to get his flow on with the ladies? Ugh, time to go on duck nest watch. It is too early from them to start going broody!

So what made me smile this week?

We are still boiling as sugaring season continues. Did you know it takes around 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup?!?!

Ester the chicken
Grandma Ester has started to lay again (after taking a year or two off!) and we are get at least one egg if not more, a week from her. I guess if she can get up and be productive, so can I!
Popeye Spinach
I ❤ spinach, but since it’s not in season right now, I’m serving up some Popeye Spinach. One thing I know for sure, fresh from the garden or out of a can….. my kids are going to hate me at dinner tonight

We held the last of our 3 part Facebook live fermenting sessions this week. I put all the videos, worksheets, and links on a Fermenting Workshop page on our website for everyone to refer back to, or so folks could join in who might have missed the live events.

duck poop
I knew better, I did, but I broke my own rule and now look at me….. Do you know my ducks vacate their bowels every morning as they waddle out of the critter shed? They do! It’s like clockwork. I have no clue what possessed me, I don’t, but Betty was just standing on top of the rabbit pen looking all adorable and I picked her up…. Now first, I have no idea how that big ol duck got up there, but she did, and I should have left her there instead of picking her up and cuddling her. But she was looking so cute!!! Do you know how bad duck shit smells? Especially when it is on your shirt, right under your nose? Shit happens, on your shirt, when you don’t remember that you should never cuddle a duck before her morning blow out…..
eggs in fridge
The girls are doing an amazing job on keeping the egg section of our fridge full…. maybe a little too full. I can’t seem to use them up or give them away fast enough!
Ginger the cat
She didn’t have a clue she was going to get spayed……
cat under bed
After her spay, she hid under the littlest country kid’s bed in a drug stupper.
ginger
Ginger finally emerged 24 hours later for a lovely meal of canned cat food. She is such a sucker for canned food! She slept with me in bed all night that night too! I think she forgives me for taking her to get spayed.

Remember to take time out of your busy day to find your own things to make you smile!

Just another day of making Maple Syrup! We boil often during sugaring season.

  1. I have had that accident with the chickens, especially Penny Henny. She comes everyday sits in a basket on our porch and lays her egg. Wish we could make our own maple syrup. Found you on Simple Homestead Blog Hop.
