DIY Shabby Chic Burlap Bunny

So many Easter decorations have more of a childish theme to them. And while the country kids are still little, it is nice to have some decor that is aimed for the adults in the family too. I am sorry, but this mama can only take so much pastel! But finding more adult themed Easter decor can be a challenge. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and make my own!

I have a well stocked craft supply and fabric area, so I decided to go through my stuff and see what I had to work with. Burlap is all the rage when it comes to shabby chic lately, and I just happened to have some in my stash! Being Easter the idea of a rabbit sounded good, so a burlap bunny is what I decided to try to make. I had no directions on this project, but now you will, because I am going to walk you through making this adorable shabby chic burlap bunny!

The first thing I did was a google search of chocolate rabbit silhouettes. When I found one I liked, I simply saved it to my computer, put it in a word document, and printed it off. I will include the image I used at the end. I also advise using a simpler outline and printing it as large as possible since burlap fabric is more difficult to turn right side out as it is a stiffer material.

After cutting out the pattern, I placed it on my burlap, which was doubled over, so that I only had to cut once, but ended up with two pieces. When I sketched the outline pattern onto my fabric with a marker, I made sure to add a 1/4 inch or so around the bunny to create more of an edge to sew on.

I sketched, cut, and then I took my fabric to the sewing machine. I stitched all the way around the edge, leaving the hind foot open for stuffing. I hadn’t worked with burlap in sewing projects before and found it more difficult to turn right side out after sewing. Using the eraser end of a pencil can help you work the smaller areas, like the ears and front paw.

Back at my craft table (a tv tray that has seen a LOT of projects LOL) I used brown paper crinkled up to stuff the bunny. Fiber fill would have shown through the burlap and wouldn’t have looked as nice. You can use an old brown paper bag ripped into strips to make filling. When I finished stuffing my bunny and sewed his back foot up, he looked okay. Not great, just okay. Poor Mr. Bunny needed something more.

I got out my pom pom makers and decided to make my bunny a tail. If you don’t have pom pom makers, you can always use cardboard tubes or a fork to make a pom pom. I then hand stitched the tail to the back end of the bunny and added a twine bow to make him look more cuddly and festive. Colorful ribbon would also look nice as a bow.

I think he turned out pretty darn good for winging it! And the littlest country kid was in love with him the moment he laid eyes on him. I have a feeling I am going to have to make a few more shabby chic burlap bunnies as this little guy has already found a home in the littlest country kid’s room! I can’t blame him, I think this bunny is WAY cooler then one of those fluffy pastel stuffed animals you find this time of year.

Here is the image I used in a word document to make my bunny.

Happy crafting!

  4. Hooray for "winging it!" Your bunny turned out great. I know what you mean about childish, pastel decor. I'll take mine in small doses, please! It's nice to have some things for the kids, AND for me, too! Pinning!

  5. Looks like your burlap bunny came out pretty doggoned great to me. You followed common sense methods and got a pretty nice bunny, what more could you ask?
I love making burlap items but burlap can be less than easy to deal with. To me that's a challenge making me want project to turn out even more so, lol. Couple years ago I set out to make a burlap purse, just winging it. Turned out pretty decent considering, is usable. and have received complements about it, used a cute fabric to line purse, make handles and outside pocket. Nice to use to haul my "stuff" to the lake.
Now if I'd just get my sewing room in order so could try something else, like your bunny.
    Have wonderful Spring week.

    1. I wing everything I make LOL Last year my littlest wanted to be a squirrel for Halloween, but of course there was no pattern available, so I threw him on top of the fur fabric at Joann's and told them to cu a yard longer then he was. LOL It took some work, a few pulled and restitched seems, but I made his a squirrel, tail and all!

  6. Aww awesome cute. I think you could use fabric scraps. Cut up by mis behaving country kids. Lol. I cut polar fleece. Nice for pet beds and washable. If you have it on hand. Enjoy. Happy Easter.
