Alaskan Sourdough Pancakes

When it comes to breakfast, nothing beats farm fresh eggs, homemade bacon and pancakes. But not all pancakes are created the same…. Around here, the best pancakes are my hubby’s sourdough pancakes. Sourdough!?!? Yup! Sounds complicated…. Well it does take some prep ahead of time, but that prep of making your own sourdough starter can be used not only in these amazing pancakes, but the best bread ever. And making a sourdough starter is easy peasy!

My husband, who had been a Alaskan fisherman for a spell before we met, was so excited when a friend shared her sourdough pancake recipe with us. I am soooooooo thankful she shared her recipe, because it was beyond amazing! Like no other pancake I have ever had and my husband got to enjoy a long lost favorite food. We have tweaked the recipe a little over time and here it is.,,,,

Ingredients
2 Cups Sourdough starter
1 1/2 Cups Flour
2 Cups very warm water

The night before take 2 cups of your sourdough starter and add 1 and 1/2 cups of flour and 2 cups of very warm water to “feed” the starter. Let it sit over night in a warm place. In the morning before you start making your pancakes, divide the mix in half and put one half back in your starter container. To the remaining half add:

1 t. baking soda
1 t. baking powder
2 t. sugar
A pinch of salt

At this point  “an interesting reaction will occur” in your pancake mix. A little bit of chemical reaction is going to go on in that bowl!!! Once that little event occurs, it is time to mix in

2 beaten eggs
4 T. of melted butter.

Super simple ingredients, wouldn’t ya say. Once the batter is mixed, it is time to cook those bad boys up in a hot greased pan, we use cast iron. No matter if they come out thin or fluffy (because each time can be different) they taste soooo good. I feel pampered when we feast like royalty on these sourdough pancakes, with our homemade butter and homemade maple syrup. I tell ya, it is shameful!

And you can go way beyond just syrup on these wonderful pancakes. Why not throw some berries on top or some powder sugar and lemon juice? Go crazy!!!! Trust me, once you try these, they will be on you permanent breakfast rotation!

  1. I love Sourdough pancakes. They are so good, a bit denser than regular but I love that. I love my sourdough starter. Did you know you can make sourdough crepes too? They are just as easy if not more and very delicious. I have a recipe for them on my blog….or just google it.
