Super Easy DIY Yarn Flowers – Make a Bouquet!

I’ll admit, I’m kinda on a DIY decor kind of kick right now. Last week I made a shabby chic burlap bunny, and this week I am adding dashes of color around the house.

I love flowers, but I hate flowers in a vase. I don’t like when pretty things die. I’m weird, I already know this. I wanted a pop of “flower” color in my home but not the dead flowers later, so I came up with some super easy DIY flowers out of things I had in my craft stash.

To make yourself a bouquet of these beauties you will need green pipe cleaners, green yarn, yarn in the color you want your flowers to be, a fork and a pair of scissors. That’s it! Really, you probably already have the stuff to make these in your house. Well if you are crafty or have kids you have the stuff. *wink* If not, for a few dollars you can pick up these items at a craft store and be on your way to colorful bouquets!

I have put together a simple step by step photo progression of this craft so you can easily see what I am talking about and follow along. So let’s get started…..

1.) Line up your green pipe cleaner with the first tine of a fork. Next, wrap your flower colored yarn around the pipe cleaner and fork 30 times.

2.) Take your green yarn and insert it between the first and second fork tine and tie a knot.

3.) Slip the yarn off the fork and pull your knot tight. Make another knot to secure the green yarn. Fold the pipe cleaner down and twist it around the “stem” to secure the pipe cleaner and yarn into place.

4.) Take the loose end of the yarn and wrap it around the stem to make it look more realistic. You may have to go back and forth a few times to cover all the flower colored yarn. Once the green is on, cut the yarn from the skein and tie it with the piece left sticking up from your initial knot.

5.) Use your scissor to cut all the loops formed at the top of the flower.

6.) Fluff your flower “petals” and trim as you see fit!

I don’t know about you, but I think anyone would love a bouquet of these beauties. And the best part is, they will never die! Now if I could just get my flowers back from my youngest son who thinks he is going to give them to his little girlfriends at preschool! *sigh* Guess I need to make more flowers……

  1. Very pretty! I might have to get off my buns and try this. I hate the stinky water real flowers make in the vase.
