A Week of Homestead Photos May 8th – 14th

What a week of highs and lows! Our oldest country kid entered double digits this birthday. Where has the time gone!?!?! He is growing into such a fine young man (most of the time LOL)

Hubby surprised me with an odd Mother’s Day gift…. another mouth to feed! Ummm geee, thanks hun! Really though, he put a lot of thought into the gift and I am delighted because she is the sweetest little rat girl ever!

We had to travel to Kalamazoo this week for the oldest country kid to take the MSTEP state testing. He managed to finish both days in just one morning! Talk about a smart, focused kid. Here is hoping he gets good marks. I enjoyed the quality one on one time we got to share that day as it doesn’t happen often.

We had to say goodbye to our alpha hen. She was over 5 years old and had been battling reproductive infections for some time. I knew the end was coming and tried to prepare myself, but of course this hard on the outside, soft in the center kind of girl ended up bawling.

So what made me smile this week?

Even though her body was failing her, Grumpy Goldie still had an
appetite for a mealworm and grape salad!

My Mother’s Day gift, a baby rat girl. I do so love rats!

Grumpy Goldie slept in the house and
enjoyed breakfast and cartoons.

The oldest country kid turned 10. We had a nice mother/son lunch.

Grumpy Goldie may have passed, but she is forever in my heart. I may have cried but I am also happy that she was a trooper till the very end and she is free of her physical body that hampered her so in the last few weeks. I know she is in the big coop in the sky, eating endless mealworms and continuing to be the amazing alpha hen she was here.

Grumpy Goldie left big wings to fill and Buffy has stepped up to take charge of the chickens.
Betty the duck has taken it upon herself to become yard boss, keeping everyone in line, chicken and duck alike.

Little Maria, my Cuckoo Maran. I see grumpiness in her eyes
and wonder if one day she will reign above all as our alpha hen.

Don’t all homestead rats live in a barn?

Buffy, undermining our foundation on the quest for the perfect dust bath.
Silly girl, you know I will just fill the hole back in!

A wonderful birthday party for the oldest country kid. I think he had a great time.
I so love throwing him themed parties! I had so much fun coming up with ideas
and putting it all together!

Remember to take time out of your busy day to find your own things to make you smile!

  1. Oh, I'm so sorry about Goldie. I'm sure many of us out here in the ether have grown to love her! As for the 'themed birthday'…..will we be seeing posts of the wonderful things you made for it….like you did for the 'edible farm animals'? Good lookin' kids, mom! And what is the new addition's name? Great pics, as usual!! Dona

    1. It was a Minecraft themed party and if you are interested I could post about it with photos. I sure did have fun making all the stuff even thought I soooo don't get the game!! LOL And I named the rat Rattyrat. Original, right? I called her that and it just stuck and since I couldn't come up with something that fit and she was already learning it as her name, we just left it.

  2. I am in tears reading the news of Grumpy Goldie's passing! We do so get attached to our feathered friends…or any fur babies that we have. So sorry for your loss! We have lost a couple hens for one reason or another since we got them last year (plus we rehomed a rooster!). Happy Birthday to your big guy! Though I am not fond of rats, I am glad you are! Happy belated Mother's Day!

    1. I can not believe how many live Goldie touch and am thankful to everyone for their support during her loss. I was not fond of rats the first time we had some, years ago, but they really do grow on you, fast! So smart, so affectionate. Like dogs without the bark or having to let them out!

  3. I was very sorry to hear about Goldie passing. I also wanted to let you know I received the chicken coloring book! Thanks so much!! The birthday boy looks very happy! I have two grandsons that turned 10 this past year – time flies!!

  4. Aww…so sorry for your loss.

Thanks for joining Cooking and Crafting with J & J!

    1. Thank you. I knew her time was nearing an end. She was such a lovely girl and she is deeply missed.

  5. I love the Cuckoo Maran, and all the fun names for your animals. What a fun variety.
Thank you for joining us on the #OMHGFF this week to share your farm!!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  6. I'm so sorry you had to say goodbye to Goldie – it's always so hard to lose a well-loved pet. Congratulations on your new little pet – she's very cute! Thank you for sharing this little glimpse into your life with us at the Hearth and Soul Hop.

    1. I am at peace with Goldie's passing. I will always miss her, but part of life is saying goodbye.

  7. I'm sorry about your Goldie's passing and going to Pet Heaven. I am surprised she lasted five years, hens don't last that long; or maybe it was the love you gave her.
The children are adorable and handsome. Cute rat!
    Thank you for hosting.
