A Week of Homestead Photos July 10th – 16th

We have been working on my hubby’s genealogy as one of the oldest country kid’s 4H projects. We found that he is related to the 7th Earl of Douglas (also known as James the gross.) *giggle* James and King James II of Scotland didn’t get along to well. Probably because King James stabbed the guy 26 times and threw his body out a window. Seriously! I can’t make this stuff up!! Amazing where 4H can take you!

Our hearts broke this week when the national spotlight got too close to home. My father is a retired police officer. He took another job serving the public after he retired, as a bailiff. My dad retired from the court house in Berrien County where two bailiffs where gunned down.  He knew both of the men who died and is taking it rather hard. Our family, friends, and neighbors rallied around him with love and support and that made me smile.

Our garden is growing, our ducks are jerks, and life goes on. It has been a busy week of ups and down, lots of activities, and well this mama is exhausted!

So what made me smile this week?

Buffy said she wasn’t playing with the littlest country kid’s toys but I’m not buying it.

Look, no lights! Finally convinced the oldest country kid to sleep without the light one, finally.

LOVE my farmer manicure!

Baby Girl giving this broody thing a go. Someone wants to play house.

Satan’s Kiss hot peppers! Yikes, I really grew some.

My dorks got caught in the rain while playing Pokemon Go. The game may be virtual,
the the rain storm was 100% real. LOL

My handsome boy at his preschool physical. Yup, the oldest country
kid is getting ready to head out into the world this fall.

Betty has joined Baby Girl on the nest *smack forehead* Rotten ducks!

Okay the fact the ducks hoodwinked me did not make me smile,
but the thought of cute little ducklings in our future did.

Mr or Mrs Lightening bug taking a nap in my garden.

Okay, the fact he ticked off Heidi the homestead hound and she bit him in the face didn’t make me smile. But the fact he was more concerned about her getting in trouble and possible having to be put down made my heart smile. He realized he was in the wrong and cared about her well being, even after she bit him. I must be doing something right. By the way, he is fine, the doctor didn’t report Heidi, and all is good with a lot more respect for each other.

Fifi and Cinder, growing into fine young ladies.

Mr. Bill getting the cold shoulder from the expectant mothers. It’s your own fault, Bill.

I thought you all might enjoy seeing a very broody mama duck!

Ester, looking as beautiful today as the spring we got her as a chick.
She is our oldest hen now, but she never lets it show!

Remember to take time out of your busy day to find your own things to make you smile!

And just a little something fun we made….. We love Family, Farm, and Home! It is our one stop homestead shop!

  1. Ouch! That is going to leave a bruise! Broody Betty is pretty fast!
Love the blog and the pics!
We uprooted our "little patch of heaven" last year & are slowly growing our new homestead.
We are looking to add ducks or ducklings again next spring. They are so messy, but, really beautiful and we have found that if you are having a bad day, just spend a little time with them and calming effect is almost instantaneous.
I have one editing comment (if I may be so bold)– I like the fancy font under your pictures, but it is diffcult to read…does it need to be larger or is it my older eyes!!??
    Thanks so much for sharing!

  4. I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad's loss, and the loss to your community. That is a real tragedy. It's lovely to see you still had lots of other reasons to smile this week. It looks like it was definitely an eventful week for you all. Good luck to your little one as he starts school this year! Thank you for sharing with us at the Hearth and Soul Hop. Hope to see you again this week!

    1. As I try to tell my children, no matter how bad life can be, look for the small things that make you smile. You have to find happiness, it is not given to you.
