Grilled Veggie and Chicken Stir Fry

Recently we were asked by Cave Tools to do a review of their Vegetable Grill Basket. Having already tried their Wood Chip Smoker Box and Rib Roast Rack, we agreed right away, as we have seen first hand the quality of their products!

Since grilling and BBQ are my hubby’s domain, when the box arrived, I passed it off to him. His first impression was that it was good quality (of course), nice and sturdy (aka not flimsy metal), and was excited to put it to work. Since he is the grill master, I gave him full range on what to make with it.

When he informed me he was going to make chicken stir fry, I admit, I was a little skeptical. I mean, come on, can you really do that on a grill?!?! The answer is YES! 100%, yes you can, and it tasted a-m-a-z-i-n-g!

First hubby got a nice charcoal fire going in the grill. I am sure you could use a gas grill, but around here, well folks turn their noses up at gas grills! He had a bowl of vegetable oil on hand for greasing the basket, which he did with a paper towel as needed.

He then took one large chicken breast that he had sliced thinly and placed it in the grill basket. He was a bit befuddled by how long it took to cook the chicken (which really wasn’t long at all.) The two things that popped into my mind were 1.) The pan was not properly positioned over the heat. *gasp* Yes, I said it. I know it was most likely not the case, but I said it. 2.) The VEGETABLE Grill Basket is designed to heat, cook, and impart flavor slower as to not char the heck out of the vegetables, thus meat would be cooked the same way. I don’t know about you but I don’t like charred meat or veggies, so the basket did exactly what it should…. cooked items in it, not burn the crud out of them, while still imparting flavor, unlike the use of tin foil.

To see how the basket worked with various items, the stir fry included red bell pepper, broccoli, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, and bean sprouts. He cooked the pepper and then removed it. Next he did the broccoli by itself, just to see how the vegetable grill basket reacted. Once he dialed in how it cooked, he set to work.

For the stir fry, hubby added one red bell pepper and a crown of broccoli for a pop of color. He then add in 4 oz of sliced white button mushrooms, a small can of bamboo shoots, a small can of water chestnuts, and a small can of beansprouts. As I watched him add layer after lay of veggies to the basket, I admit, I was drooling! When he put the chicken back in to warm it through again, I was ready to eat!

But he wasn’t ready to let us dig in just yet. He had whipped up a stir fry sauce!?!?! When I asked him what was in it he told me soy sauce, honey, sesame seed oil, a clover of garlic, and teaspoon of powdered ginger. When I asked him how much soy, honey, and sesame, he said “to taste.” *smacks forehead* It was so stinkin yummy and he didn’t pay attention to how much of what he used?!?! *sigh* Now you could be adventures and start mixing these items up “to taste” or you can use your favorite store bought stir fry sauce if you want.

This WILL be a repeat dish at our house. Not only did we love it, but our neighbor had dinner with us and she even took some home so he could have it at work for lunch the next day!

So did we like the Vegetable Grill Basket?

Not only is this product well constructed, amazing to use, but easy to clean as it is dishwasher safe. Seriously, we used it, popped it in the dishwasher and we were done!
